Who rules the world?

Today is International Women’s Day around the world, so I thought there was no better way than to highlight some of my favorite women in video games. In each of her stories, the heroines show the greatest determination. Whether it’s redemption, surviving a pandemic, traversing the horizon of a bustling cityscape or a post-apocalyptic, dystopian future, there are plenty of acclaimed titles that leave a legacy for generations to come. Points; great moments that defined our favorite medium, with a thrilling chronicle of each heroine undertaking her own harrowing expedition. In doing so, we honor their courageous encounters in which we live sincerely.

It was hard to pick just a few, as each of their fictional exploits came from incredible potboilers. We acknowledge the creator of each character and his innovations to realize the heart, courage and passion in their many personalities. It’s an understatement that the biggest game has the strongest female protagonists, with the Nathan Drake trope starting to bubble up with each rising generation. We didn’t want to leave it at five entries, as we included ten other honorable mentions, but here are five of our favorite heroines in the video game world.

#1 – Ally

Series

The last of us

Creator

Neil Druckmann

The first appearance

14. June 2013

Without a doubt one of the most polarized heroes in recent history. We’ve seen Ellie’s character evolve from a headstrong, reckless, immature and arrogant teenager to a ruthless mercenary who survives in the new normal. A mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus continues to destroy humanity and bring civilization to the brink of extinction. From the submissive and carefree lifestyle to the utterly carefree and apathetic randomness of life to the play of uncertainty with every emotion in Ellie’s coming-of-age story. Playing as her mentor Joel and then watching her grow up in The Last of Us Part II made for a fun, understated and suspenseful ride that promised nothing and only offered endless possibilities in Ellie’s ongoing escapade.

She never gives up her attitude, and a willingness to hold out false hope after discovering her true identity should be part of everyone’s instinctive confession. Although The Last of Us, Part II shows some growth in Ellie as a character, her real character development is highlighted by the many teachings of the hopeful father figure who only wants her life back. Her disdain for figureheads blossoms in her ambitious quest to keep her loved ones and close friends safe, but her inner guilt is perhaps something a young adult can’t avoid, and in a broken world like The Last of Us, it’s admirable that she continues to carry that guilt.

#2 – Aloy

Series

The Horizon franchise

Creator

Matthijs de Jonge

The first appearance

February 28, 2017

Imagine that. A war-torn world, a post-cataclysmic, semi-ecotopic way of life. Technology is seen as the enemy and is only represented by a few facets in the environment. Anamorphic androids roam the earth with what is left of civilization, protecting their own tribe or village. Almost as if existence had hit the reset button, but with some semblance of the technological features that survived the aforementioned catastrophe. Horizon Zero Dawn follows an ambitious young teenager simply trying to be accepted into this world. The child called Motherless, who comes from an unknown existence, seeks the truth behind his conception.

This origin story forges a unique path that takes our adventuress Aloy on a challenging flight through absolutely breathtaking scenery and a vast atlas of trials that aim to challenge a hopeful adolescent on her almost forbidden crusade. Her silent quest promises to bring the truth about this young warrior’s true presence and how she was exiled. The story of a lost child who was taught by his guardian to be the best he could be, and who was ostracized by all the tribes of the continent. When the ordeal is over, their adventure leads them to unique twists and a confrontational story that can leave players bewildered.

#3 – Faith

Series

The edge of the mirror

Creator

Thomas Andersson

The first appearance

November 11, 2008

Runner. A thrill seeker who does his duty as a courier on the black market and makes money for delivery. A lifestyle frowned upon by the leading figures of this distant and ramshackle metropolis. Its despotic bliss is maintained by a mediocre war, kept in check by leaders seeking supremacy and rule without democracy. But no one complains, they get on with their lives and pretend it’s part of the daily routine, except Faith Connors and her clan. Guided by her boss and father figure – an acronym for Mercury – the 24-year-old seeks justice, as does Kate, a police officer and Vera’s older sister. Only young Runaway wants to idolize the crooks who rule the city and take the law into his own hands.

A literal Game of Thrones is set in the city’s insane monarchy, and the landscape changes dramatically after the assassination of Mayor Robert Pope. Kate is accused of murder and appears to be convicted of manslaughter, but her sister gets involved and hops around the high towers and skyscrapers of this pale world full of obelisks, demanding that whistleblowers report the Pope’s death. Mirror’s Edge is an enchanting story with addictive gameplay and immersive sequences that were unmatched even in the 2014 reboot. The original title is unique and offers a new approach to the platform action-adventure genre by combining the features of first-person shooter/glove combat with parkour. One of the most important of 2008.

#4 – Tifa Lockhart

Series

The last fantasy

Creator

Tetsuya Nomura

The first appearance

31. January 1997

She’s so cool. Tifa Lockhart’s first appearance in Final Fantasy VII for PlayStation in 1997 embodied what we all loved about the confident heroine. His likeable character was admired for his unorthodox design, but the JRPG world was captivated by his natural abilities and powerful fists. The creator of the series, Tetsuya Nomura, has further reflected on his vision for the evolution of Tifa’s design in Final Fantasy VII: Advent kids. For the first time since the original game, fans could fully understand Nomura’s concept for each holistic character and how he envisioned them. Glowing boasted the naked ferocity of the young beauty, crushing all rivals with confidence.

This feature film inspired Tifu to remake Final Fantasy VII in 2020: A remake that puts even more emphasis on the brawler’s movements. His determination to maintain perspective and harmony between Avalanche and Cloud, and the admiration of his closest associates. A glimmer of positivity but also determination makes Tifa one of the greatest heroines in the game. Her never giving up attitude inspires many who have played all incarnations of this sincere heroine. It’s hard not to fall in love with her; a feisty, sincere young woman who seems to lead her friends to a quiet determination in every direction she takes. I can’t wait to see the remake of FFVII: Part II.

#5 – Lara Croft

Series

Grave Robbers

Creator

TobyGuard

The first appearance

25. October 1996.

The gold standard; an absolute mainstay of female protagonists. If there’s one person you can point to, it’s Lara Croft. One of the most respected heroines in the game, who eventually paved the way for many more sinister women to take on many formidable characters. From digs to countless adventures, Lara has captivated a generation of gamers since she first appeared on PlayStation in the first Tomb Raider game. The English-born femme fatale, rope thrower and pyramid marauder, is cornered by the players. The striking concept that mixes fiction and fantasy for this Lara, with her many escapes over the years, will bring fans to their feet. There’s no denying that the interweaving of Lara Croft’s story into games has had a big impact on many action games in the genre. Without him, there would be no Uncharted: Drake’s fortune. But without Uncharted, there probably wouldn’t be a Tomb Raider reboot.

As Lara proudly carried the torch for PlayStation in the early days, the flame was ignited for a possible future beyond the PSX era. The series was shelved after Underworld in 2009, a poor attempt by the developers to counter Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 2: Amongst thieves. The developers at Redwood knew they had to revive and reboot the entire series, and so Tomb Raider 2013 was released, which takes us back to Lara’s roots before she became a seasoned treasure hunter. As such, the third version of Tomb Raider received rave reviews and positive reactions from fans for its return to form. Lara Croft continues to influence the gaming spectrum with industry-leading performances and a heroine who continues to set the tone in celebration.

Honourable mentions:

Princess Zelda (The Legend of Zelda)

Chell (Portal)

Aerith Gainsborough (Final Fantasy VII)

Clementine (Telltale The Walking Dead).

Makoto Niijima (Persona 5)

Commander Shepard (Mass Effect)

Jill Valentine (Resident Evil)

Samus Aran (Metroid)

Elena Fisher (not registered)

Chun-Li (Street Fighter)
