JRPGs (Japanese role-playing games) are fantastic experiences that may provide a welcome break from a busy schedule. With its vivid colors, stunning sceneries, and engaging gameplay, they transport you to another world. Most feature a captivating tale that will keep you engrossed from start to finish. While the Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One don’t feature as many JRPGs as Sony’s PS4 and PS5, Microsoft’s system still has enough to offer. On these Xbox systems, here are some of the top JRPGs, rated from worst to best.

Nier Automata is the worst of the finest.

Nier Automata is a strange game in both positive and negative aspects. For its innovative narrative tactics, fascinating music, furious action, and distinctive characters, it has millions of admirers all over the globe. Nier Automata, on the other hand, has a few basic gameplay flaws. The first is the inadequate map (which the game actually points out in some dialogue). It’s difficult to discern where several crucial objective points are, and working with it is generally irritating. The second problem is the scenery; everything is uninteresting to look at save the amusement park since it is situated in a post-apocalyptic world. Nonetheless, many consider this to be one of the finest JRPGs ever developed, so it’s worth picking up and playing.

Like A Dragon (Yakuza)

Although the Yakuza series is most known for its open-world action games, Like A Dragon opted for a turn-based RPG approach. Because the main character Ichiban is a major admirer of the Dragon Quest series, this is the case. With its fighting system, the series’ twists are tremendously fun, and the plot, like many previous Yakuza games, is excellent. Exploring Isezaki Ijincho is also entertaining, since there are several side quests, arcades to explore, and restaurants to visit. In his DoubleXP review of the game, Zack Palm noted, “Even though the grind may seem a bit onerous, the characters and plot elevate it to make the entry a worthwhile addition to the Yakuza series.”

Arise Stories

A stand-out action RPG you should pick up for your Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One is Arise Stories. It has an engaging story, relatable characters, and a revamped combat system for the series. Prior Tales of titles like Zestiria and Berseria looked like Xbox 360 games, so the graphical leap is a welcome addition to the once-tired series. It also comes with a somewhat darker tale than prior entries, which some may appreciate. Pulling off a combo within Arise Stories’s fast-paced combat system is a rush as well. We thought it was one of the best games of 2021.

The Zodiac Age, Final Fantasy XII

A PS2 classic made its way to Xbox systems with The Zodiac Age, Final Fantasy XII, an HD remaster. This Final Fantasy entry made a mark for its enriching world, personality-filled characters, and customizable gameplay experience. It tells an engaging story of an impoverished young man named Vaan exploring the world and ultimately wanting to become a sky pirate. Along the way, he meets a princess, a long supposed traitor, and a Han Solo-type called Balthier. The combat plays differently than most games in the series with an MMO-like combat system that has you focus on your timing of abilities and attacks. It also lets you customize your characters in a thorough manner with the gambit system. Oh, and don’t forget the amazing soundtrack by Hitoshi Sakimoto.

HD Remaster of Final Fantasy X/X-2

Final Fantasy X is a spectacular JRPG that is considered the beloved franchise’s magnum work. Its storyline is unrivaled, as it chronicles the story of Tidus, a newbie, and Yuna, a summoner, who steadily fall in love. As they continue to explore Spira, each member in the team, such as Rikku and Wakka, has their own problems to face. With a variety of dramatic boss encounters and monster kinds, the game continues ramping up the intensity. And the tale is spot on, building up tense tension as it leads to an apparent conclusion. While the voice acting might be a bit off-putting at times (HA HA HA), the performances are absolutely excellent. The great composer Nobuo Uematsu’s Final Fantasy send-off, which included songs like “To Zanarkand” and “Silence Before the Storm,” will be remembered for a long time.

Kingdom Hearts III: Complete Edition

If you want value for your money, the Kingdom Hearts III: Complete Edition is an excellent JRPG series bundle you can get. Starting from the beginning of the series on PS2 all the way to the most recent Kingdom Hearts 3, it has every game you’ll need, remastered, placed in 60 frames per second, and ready for HD screens. If you’re a fan of Disney movies like Alice in Wonderland and Final Fantasy games, you’re in for a treat as you’ll be exploring familiar worlds and meeting nostalgic characters along the way.

In addition, you’ll grow to appreciate Square Enix’s new characters, such as Sora, Riku, and Roxas, to mention a few. Furthermore, it has a creative plot and one of the most intricate action RPG fighting systems available. In combat, you may utilize summons, more powerful clothing forms that let you to carry two keyblades at once, loads of magic, a variety of skills, and more. While the Kingdom Hearts series may seem intimidating to newbies, it will most certainly enthrall you if you begin from the beginning and play each game in sequence.

Elden Ring is the greatest of the best.

Elden Ring is one of the finest JRPGs ever developed, regardless of recency bias. When you initially play the game, it offers you a huge feeling of adventure, and the creator FromSoftware continues to surprise you for hours on end. In spectacular boss fights, dragons, skeletons, and other mythical monsters are ready to assault you. You’ll get spectacular riches as a reward for defeating these difficult encounters.

If you’ve tried the Souls games and found them too challenging, Elden Ring’s enchantment is that it has a lot more things to explore in its open environment. If you’re having trouble defeating a boss, rather than following a fixed route, you may always return to it. I’ve never been a big fan of the Souls games, but I’ve put in over 50 hours into Elden Ring.

Furthermore, it incentivizes you to go further into each game zone, inspecting every nook and corner. Elden Ring will attract you with its rich settings and fascinating voice acting behind the characters, even if the plot isn’t the major emphasis. In our review, we awarded the game a perfect score.
