The latest addition to the TUF Gaming line of graphics cards, the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT OC Edition is a factory overclocked variant of the RX 6700 that’s about to take on the GTX 1060 in the sub-£300 market. It can be compared with the Radeon RX 590, but in an increasingly crowded market, it’s going to have to pull out some big guns.
A couple of weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to visit ASUS headquarters in Taiwan for the launch of the TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT OC Edition. So, what did I think? Well it’s a very attractive looking product based on a very attractive looking GPU. So, how does it perform? Well, to be honest, so far I’ve only tested the 4GB version and I’ve not had the chance to test the 8GB version, but it looks like the performance is very similar to the other RX 6700 XT cards I’ve tested. The card has a nice factory overclock and it’s definitely a bit quieter than the reference card.
ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT OC Edition Review ASUS’ TUF – Tough User Friendly – is a product line that is meant to be taken seriously. For the last few years TUF has offered a design philosophy that is built around toughness, durability, and reliability. These are not just marketing words, but real products that are severely tested to the point where they are almost indestructible, and they are actually used by real world gamers. The TUF lineup is created to combat the majority of the more common problems that gamers experience with their hardware.
Today, on our test bench, we see a mid-range offering based on AMD – ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT OC Edition 12GB GDDR6. The Radeon RX 6700 XT was released on the 17th. March 2021 was released for $479, with custom models priced higher. This release should expand the Radeon 6000/RDNA2 line into a mid-range performance class.
To achieve this, AMD downsized the Navi 21 chip to produce a cheaper piece of silicon for the Radeon RX 6700 XT series, also known as the Navi 22. AMD’s reference specifications for this GPU show a base frequency of 2,321 MHz, a gaming frequency of 2,424 MHz, a boost frequency of 2,581 MHz, and the GDDR6 memory clock is set to 2,000 MHz or 16 Gbps.
In this silicon array we have 2560 stream processors, 64 render output blocks and 160 texture mapping blocks. The clock speeds have been significantly increased compared to the Radeon RX 6800 XT and Radeon RX 6900 XT. For the above graphics cards, the reference clock frequencies were set to a base frequency of 1825 MHz, a gaming frequency of 2015 MHz, and a boost clock frequency of 2250 MHz. While the Radeon RX 6700 XT reference specifies a base clock of 2321 MHz, our game clock is 2424 MHz, with a maximum clock of 2581 MHz. This clock increase is really impressive and shows that AMD has come a long way with the RDNA2 architecture.
AMD’s Infinity cache is retained, but with a smaller 96 MB cache compared to the Navi 21’s 128 MB Infinity cache. This silicon is combined with 12GB of GDDR6 video memory on a 192-bit bus, good for 384GB/s of memory bandwidth. The bus width may not seem like much, but it is important to remember that this memory system is supported by 96 MB Infinity cache. All of these reductions in stream processors, ROPs, TMUs, Infinity Cache and bus width make sense given AMD’s goal of increasing clock speeds and performance for 1440p gaming.
ASUS describes the UFC as:
TUF GAMING’s Radeon RX 6700 XT is a rugged beast with a sturdy metal chassis, super-efficient cooling, and components that offer increased endurance. Three powerful axial fans with double ball bearings and additional blades are mounted on the all-metal housing. Underneath the exoskeleton is a thick heatsink that keeps temperatures tightly under control, and TUF components selected for maximum durability and performance keep the board at the forefront of developments. You asked for an angry machine…. This one is ready to go.
The TUF-RX6700XT-O12G gaming is one of the highest rated Radeon RX 6700 XT models offered by ASUS. Only the ROG STRIX series takes a higher position on the totem pole. The look is much more subdued on our TUF-RX6700XT-O12G, but it still has a high-end feel, even for a mid-range product.
ASUS has increased the clock speeds compared to the AMD benchmark specs we mentioned above. On the gaming TUF-RX6700XT-O12G, we see a base frequency of 2.418 MHz (+4%), a gaming frequency of 2.514 MHz (+4%), and a boost frequency of 2.622 MHz (+2%), with memory remaining at the base specification. These numbers are decent for a factory overclock, especially considering that ASUS still has the top-of-the-line ROG STRIX OC in the running. According to ASUS marketing, the entire package undergoes a 144-hour testing program that ensures the cards are compatible with the latest games while maintaining maximum clock speeds.
ASUS chose the gaming design TUF-RX6700XT-O12G with 2.9 slots (essentially a three slot graphics card). The large-scale cooling solution uses multiple nickel-plated copper heat pipes in combination with numerous cooling fins that take up the most space under the hood. We do not see an underused and unnecessarily thick card, as used to be the case in industry.
ASUS has integrated a PCB vent and metal backplate to reduce hot air currents that affect cooling performance. Once again, ASUS’ MaxContact heatsink design is mentioned, which provides a very flat surface for excellent heat transfer from the GPU die to the heatsink. We also saw that ASUS implemented a dual BIOS on this model, a nice bonus that is located in an easier-to-access location on the board.
These designs are complemented by ASUS’ exclusive Axial-Tech fan design, which is extended to include 11 blades on the outer fans and 13 blades on the inner fans. This middle blade also has a full height outer ring around the 13 blades to create more static pressure on the GPU die. Each 11-blade fan is designed to create a stronger side inlet and deliver smoother airflow through the finned heatsink.
ASUS has included a 0db fan feature that shuts down the graphics card’s fans at temperatures below 55°C, significantly reducing noise levels. One final note about fans: ASUS continues to use a single central fan that rotates in the opposite direction of the two external fans, which ASUS says reduces turbulence and noise.
RGB on this board is limited to the top of the back of the board, toward the power connector, and a fully machined aluminum chassis, contributing to an industrial design and gray color scheme. Branding is limited, but still present: the TUF gaming badge under the RGB backlight and the Radeon logo on top near the I/O bracket. Many of the pitfalls of overly gamer-oriented designs have been avoided here, and it’s a good option for those who find the aesthetics distasteful.
The graphics card is built with TUF components, which consist of military grade capacitors. They are soldered to the PCB using Auto-Extreme’s automated fabrication process, with precision connections and elimination of human error to meet stringent specifications. The TUF has a shielded bottom with a protective metal back panel with a large vent. Hot air can escape to the home’s exhaust fans. GPU support ensures more stability, and stainless steel is used for I/O support.
The ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT OC Edition video card measures 12.68 inches long x 5.98 inches wide x 2.9 inches high. This means it is significantly larger than the reference graphics card (10.5 inches long x 4.3 wide and 2 high), so make sure you have room in your cabinet. It requires two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors and the recommended power supply is 650W. There are three DisplayPort 1.4a ports and one HDMI 2.1 port on board.Today, the gaming market has changed drastically since the launch of GPU manufacturers. Graphics cards are becoming smaller and more powerful. The market has been dominated by Nvidia for the majority of its existence. However, in the past few years, AMD has been making a big comeback with their highly powerful GPUs. With the release of the RX 400 series, AMD has introduced a new direction to the industry. These cards are based around their latest Polaris architecture.. Read more about asus rog strix radeon rx 6700 xt oc edition gaming graphics card msrp and let us know what you think.
