This step-by-step guide shows you how to install custom images in Football Manager 2021, including logos, sweaters, face masks, backgrounds, soccer balls and field textures.

Introduction

Welcome to the latest version of the graphic installation guide for Football Manager.

This guide shows you how to install the most common types of images in Football Manager.

In addition, unless otherwise stated, the instructions are generally the same whether you are using the Steam, Epic or Gamepass versions of the game, whether you are playing Windows, Mac or Linux, or buying a floppy disk or digital copy of the game.

Please note: as always, it is advisable to scan every file downloaded from the Internet for viruses. Sports Interactive or SEGA has no control over the content of third parties and therefore downloads from third parties are used at your own risk.

We also recommend that you read all the instructions on the download page for the content you install (or find them in the readme file attached to the download), as they may contain additional instructions for that file. This is especially important for multicomponent mega-packages that can be unpacked in a certain order.

How to make cards

This section of the guide explains how to install 3D kits, 2D kits, logos, trophies, backgrounds and stadium images. Although each of these kits is slightly different, the instructions for installing them are exactly the same.

Once you have uploaded a file, it is usually in one of three formats: zip, rar or 7z file.

Zip files must be automatically supported by your operating system and can be displayed as compressed folders. For Rar and 7z files it may be necessary to download software to extract the files; we recommend the following software:

The windows: 7-Zip [www.7-zip.org] (Select the last .exe)

MacOS: Unarchiver [wakaba.c3.cx] (in English)

Linux : If you use Linux, we hope you already know how to download and find software for Linux.

7-Zip is installed with the .exe file that can be downloaded by following the on-screen instructions. To install Unarchiver, double-click the .zip file you downloaded from their website and drag and drop the unzipped program (called Unarchiver) into your application folder.

After the installation, create a new folder that you can follow (for example on your desktop) and place a downloaded image in zip, rar or 7z format. Now we take it out:

The windows: Right click on Blitz, Riri or 7z. Select 7-Zip from the menu and then select Extract here.

MacOS X: Right click (or ctrl + click) on your zipper, rar or 7z. Choose Open with, then Unarchiver.
Your file needs to be unzipped and most likely you will need to create a folder in the same folder.

If you have unpacked (or just downloaded directly) an fmf file, that’s no problem, they’re just files packed with the FM source tool, and as an end user, you don’t have to worry about unpacking them, you just consider them as the same folder you would get when unpacking the files.

User location

After downloading and unpacking your files, you need to move them to the User Data Location folder so that the game can read them.

First make sure you run the game at least once (go to the start menu and exit normally) so that the game can create the right folders for you.

By default, the User Data Location folder is located under the DocumentsSports Interactive folder. This folder contains the Football Manager folder for each version of FM started on this computer.

Just open the Soccer Manager folder corresponding to the version you are using.

FM TOUCH USER : By default, you will need the Touch folder.

USERS OF GAMEPASS/SOFTSHOPS : If you’re using this version of the game, your user data is in a slightly different folder, you need to open the Football Manager folder for the year of the game you’re using, and in this folder you’ll see the Gamepass folder, and this is the folder you need.

Once you have opened the correct Football Manager folder, you should see a list of folders, and what you should do is find a folder with the name of the table; if this folder does not exist, just create a new folder and call it up with the name of the table.

Now open the chart folder and put the unpacked files in it.

In most cases, it doesn’t matter in which subfolders you place your images, although it’s best to separate the different types in their own subfolders so that you don’t accidentally overwrite your sets with logos for the same teams. When organizing, pay attention to the xml configuration files. They are vital and must not interfere. A set of diagrams comes with a single configuration file in the same folder. Make sure they are all in the same folder together and that no new png or configuration files are added or overwritten in their folder.

For best results, try to keep folder names short and simple and avoid special characters where possible.

Below, for example, is a screenshot that shows what a typical destination folder should look like if it is executed correctly. Note that you have a configuration file and several graphics files, with a simple and short folder structure that prevents you from accidentally overwriting the configuration file when you :

Display of in-game graphics

After adding the images you want to upload to the game, go to the Settings menu.

You can then select Advanced on the left side or Interface from the drop-down list on the top right, then scroll down to the Skin section and use the Caching tag to shorten the download time, and remove the Skin Restart Tag when the changes to the options are confirmed.

Or, in the search box at the top of the skin type and search results, clear the Use caching to reduce download time and select the Restart skin box when you confirm the settings changes.

Then select Confirm and your new map will be displayed. (Once the diagram is loaded and you no longer plan to add it, you can activate the skin cache and uncheck the Always reload button.

If you want to add more images, simply repeat the above steps, making sure you place each package you install in its own folder so that you don’t accidentally overwrite the configuration files of previous packages.

How to install other things

It is also possible to overwrite other items in Football Manager, which in most cases are installed in different folders in your custom data location.

FM TOUCH RADIO USER: By default, you will need the Touch folder.

USERS OF GAMEPASS/SOFTSHOPS : If you’re using this version of the game, your user data is in a slightly different folder, you need to open the Football Manager folder for the year of the game you’re using, and in this folder you’ll see the Gamepass folder, and this is the folder you need.

Once you have opened the Football Manager 2021 folder, you should see a list of folders, and what you need to do is find the right folder for the item you want to install. I have listed some common examples below. For other articles, it is best to consult the website or thread from which you downloaded the article, as they should contain instructions on how to install them.

If the following folders do not exist (and usually will not exist), just create them and place the unpacked files in the folder below:

3D game ball
net ball

Step
Textures Tip

2D Game Ball
Texture Coincidence_Iconds

2D-Winter match ball
texturesmatch_iconswinter

Also note that it is generally recommended to replace these items during a game, because the skin update does not tend to update the files related to the games.

Once you’ve added what you want, download the game, go to the Options -> Interface menu and uncheck Use caching to reduce page loading time, and check the Restart Wrapping option if you confirm the changes to the options, then choose Confirm, and your new diagram should now appear. (Once the diagram is loaded and you no longer plan to add it, you can activate the skin cache and uncheck the Always reload button.

Transfer of files from previous version

Almost all custom tables can be moved from one version of the Soccer Manager to another, with the exception of

– Skins, skins can only be used for the version of the game for which they were created. It may seem like last year’s skin might work in a new game at first, but if you get to a new screen, you’ll probably get a broken/white screen at best, or even a game crash, so it’s best to wait for the creator of the skin to renew the skin (or make his with his permission).

– The 3D landscape has changed again with the FM18. So if you use the FM18 on the stations, you need games created with templates for this game on the stations, if you play an older version, you need templates up to FM18.

– Charts published in fmf format may not work in different versions if a later version of Football Manager cannot read the fmf files. You must use Resource Tool to extract the content of an fmf file from a previous version, then extract it and treat it as normal files or reorganize it with Resource Tool from the current version.

There are two ways to transfer images between versions of Football Manager ;

1. Manually move your graphics folder (or the folders with the content you want to move) from the User Data Location folder of the current football manager to the same location in the User Data Location folder of the new football manager. When moving content, make sure that the folder structure remains the same (unless otherwise specified).

2. Change the location of the custom data for the new version of Football Manager to specify the location you used for the current version. (Note that in this case you want to move a user’s graphics file to another location to accidentally overwrite it in the new version or to cause problems when trying to read files from the old version in the current version).

When you’ve done this:

Go to Settings -> Interface and disable caching Use caching to reduce page loading time and check Restart skins when settings are confirmed. (Once the images are loaded and you no longer plan to add them, you can enable the skin cache and disable the Always reload button.)
