Intel 11th Gen Core Desktop Processor Rocket Lake-S


Not too long ago, Intel released the Comet Lake-S, the 10th generation of its flagship product. Intel will release a new generation of processors and chipsets at the end of March 2021.  Today’s article is just an overview of what to expect, it is not a discussion of the material, that will come later.  Intel will launch 11th generation desktop processors. Rocket Lake S

Rocket Lake-S is Intel’s 11th generation. 14nm core desktop processor generation.  However, it is a new architecture and a brand new processor core codenamed Cypress Cove.  This is a big difference from the previous generation Comet Lake S.

For the 11th. For the 7th generation Rocket Lake-S, Intel has taken the 10nm Sunny Cove IP core of the Ice Lake laptop processors and upgraded it to 14nm.  Why 14nm? The maturity of its process allows Intel to achieve the very high frequencies that desktop users demand.  Because of the integration of new integrated graphics and other benefits, Intel has named these new cores Cypress Cove Rocket Lake-S.

Intel explained that it wanted to increase both the number of instructions per clock (IPC) and the high frequency, and that this was possible by sticking to the mature 14nm process.  So Intel has put the improved 10nm Sunny Cove IPC into a process that can achieve the higher frequencies that desktop users need.  This means that the new Rocket Lake processors have a 19% CPI improvement over the 10th generation processors. The Intel UDH integrated graphics card now includes the new Intel Xe Tiger Lake graphics architecture, which offers a 50% improvement in graphics performance.  Intel has also integrated the new Intel Deep Learning Boost AI processor into the processor.  The architecture now supports DDR4-3200 RAM as the default speed.  In fact, Rocket Lake-S uses a new integrated memory controller.

With the improved Intel Xe graphics card, it can now support 10-bit AVI decompression, 12-bit HEVC and E2E compression.  The architecture now supports up to 20 PCIe 4.0 processor lanes, as well as HDMI 2.0 and HBR3.  There are also new overclocking options, and the customizable BAR is also supported throughout.

What about hearts?

The downside to Rocket Lake S processors is that there will be no 10-core processors like the i9-10900k in this generation.  Instead, the highest number of core/dreads would be the i9-11900K with 8 cores/16 threads.  The reason for this reduction is that the PI at 10 nm is transferred to 14 nm, which is more.  Since the IP is larger at 14nm, this means higher power requirements, a larger die area and higher cost, and generally lower frequencies to increase the number of cores.  Intel wanted to keep Tiger Lake’s improved Intel Xe integrated graphics component for its business users, so another component had to be integrated.

The 14-nanometer process provides the necessary frequencies for desktop processors, but to stay within budget, Intel did not want the process to increase the number of cores.  Instead, Intel wanted to focus on those high frequencies and potential performance of single-core IPCs.  So it’s a mix of moving from 10nm IP to higher frequencies at 14nm.  However, the loss, as we can see, is reaching 8 cores and 16 strands.


As we have seen in the past, there will be i9, i7 and i5 SKUs.  All i9 and i7 SKUs will have 8 cores and 16 threads.  The i5 SKU will have 6 cores and 12 threads.  K SKUs are unlocked in the same manner as KF and T SKUs.

Leading the way is the i9-11900K, which features Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 to 5.1 GHz and Turbo Boost Max 3.0 to 5.2 GHz, as well as single-core Intel Thermal Velocity Boost at 5.3 GHz or multi-core Turbo Boost at 4.8 GHz.  Yes, the frequency domain gets very confusing here, and we won’t list them all, but you can see in the table how they are constructed.  The TDP of the top i9 and i7 processors is 125 W.  The i9 and i7 models have up to 44 PCIe and DDR4-3200 lanes and 16 MB Intel Smart Cache.  There is 2 MB of cache available per core.

The top-end i5 SKU will be the i5-11600K.  It features Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 speeds up to 4.9 GHz and Intel Multi-core Turbo speeds up to 4.6 GHz. The i5 does not support Intel Turbo Boost Max or Intel Thermal Velocity.  It will have a 12M smart cache and a TDP of 125W.  All i5 processors have up to 44 PCIe lanes and run on DDR4-3200.

The information below shows that the i3 SKU processors will simply be upgraded to the Comet Lake-S 10. The first generation of Intel Core desktop processors will be upgraded.  So to compete in Rocket Lake, you need an 11th generation i5, i7 or i9.
