January 2020 NPD Sales Results –

The numbers for video game sales in the United States for January 2020 are out and they are not good for the video game industry as a whole. The obvious lack of compelling software caused this month’s sales to drop 31% year over year to just $311 million. Remember that last year, Resident Evil 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3 both led the way, along with strong sellers like New Super Mario Bros. You Deluxe at the desk. Anyone with a keen interest in video games can tell you that this spring has been exceptionally slow due to the lack of blockbusters we’ve become accustomed to in recent years.

The numbers for video game hardware have gotten even worse! They fell 35% year over year, from $199 million the previous year to $129 million. This is to be expected as new systems like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will hit store shelves later this year. Most retailers regularly lower the price of the Xbox One X by $150 (from $499 to $349), and even this doesn’t seem to attract new buyers. Contributions for props and playing cards were $238 million, compared to $268 million in the prior year. Adding up all these figures, total revenue was $678 million, down 26% from the previous year’s $918 million. Ouch!

With previous generations of consoles, we expected a steady decline in hardware and software prices. Although the PS4 and Xbox One S sold for just $199 on Black Friday, the steady drop in prices has been the missing link in this console cycle. In fact, there was only a permanent price adjustment for PS4 from $399 at launch to $299 today. It’s incredible when you consider how long the console has been on sale. One can’t help but wonder how many more copies could be sold if they could permanently raise the price to $199.

The Nintendo Switch is once again leading the way in hardware sales. This is not a big surprise, given its continued popularity and relative newness compared to competing systems. Unfortunately, the Switch could not surpass its huge sales in January 2019, with a year-over-year decline. That’s partly because there’s no new software this month, but also because the hybrid has improved with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which came out a month ago.

As for February, there don’t seem to be any big games this month and we can expect similar results (less than last year). As tax returns begin to reach customers, perhaps this will help boost sales in late February and March, when some high-profile games like Animal Crossing are released: New Horizons and Forever Rock.
