A Tale of Two Worlds

Lost words: Behind the Page is a game with two stories. The game is about a young girl named Izzy, 12 or 13 years old. Izzy is very close to her elderly grandmother, who unfortunately had a stroke. Izzy takes an emotional journey in response to her guilt, anger, and doubts about how to move forward in her life and achieve her goals.

The second story Lost Words: Beyond the Page wants to tell you what Izzy is trying to write. Inspired by her grandmother’s advice, Izzy decides to write a fantasy story set in the world of Estonia in her journal. A fantasy story in which you, as a girl named Grace (but you can choose other names too), become the guardian of a firefly, the protector of your village and the keeper of a book of magical words.

Use your words

The premise of Lost Words is that you use the words in the spellbook to affect the world around you. This translates into the use of a firefly (cursor) to enter a word, for example. B. Tear your book and drag it over a column to knock it down and open a path, then use a repair to fix the bridge so you can cross it.

I must say that using magic words to change the world around you is a very satisfying feeling. It’s not hard, far from it, but it’s something I really liked using. It would be nice if the book expanded a bit more.

Izzy and Grace

The two stories run parallel, with Izzy and Grace getting to know each other through play. In Estonia, Grace collects fireflies and hunts a dragon. The gameplay in the world of Estoria is side-scrolling and platforming, with these terms you can change your environment to move around.

As Grace progresses in her mission, texts appear in the landscape describing her actions, feelings and motivations. The effect is like a fairy tale come to life. For those looking for a sophisticated platform with side rollers, this is not the case. Neither Izzy’s nor Grace’s story is a difficult challenge, and there is no way to die.

In the real world, the story unfolds on the pages of Izzy’s journal, you move through the book, jumping and running through the words as Izzy writes them. They also work with words to put together sentences and situations.

For example, if the grandmother is talking about little acorns growing on big trees, take a watering can in hand to water the tree in the picture to make it grow. Or you make a cup of tea for Izzy’s mother, you see a picture in the kitchen and you have to fill the kettle, pour the tea, add the tea bag, milk and sugar.

A sweet and heartbreaking story

This short game is about 4-5 hours long, and that is the only complaint I have about this game. Because I was totally into Izzy’s story, I didn’t want it to end. The climax of Grace’s story in Estonia was beautiful, tender and practically in equal measure. It was a perfect ending that made Izzy’s story even more believable and showed Izzy’s growing maturity and acceptance of the situation.

Although especially the fantasy story will make you repeat the plot and revive the old country more than once. For me, though, the game never feels like a chore.

Lost words: Beyond the Page is very simple in terms of gameplay. It’s really a story that drives the game and carries an incredibly powerful message. It’s a story we all know at some point in our lives.

Aids and visual controls

Izzy’s journal is presented to you through beautiful watercolor drawings that appear on the pages of her journal. Grace Estoria is home to a magical world of color and life. Some of the graphics in the Grace section of the game are stunning, hand-drawn and absolutely gorgeous.

All narration is fully filtered and dubbed. The voices of Izzy and Grace draw you into the story with their voices. The soundtrack and effects are also on par with the visuals. They help make it all a fascinating experience. You control the game with the Joy-Con, and everything works as it should.

Lost words: Beyond the Page will not be a game for all players, as it has no difficulty level in terms of gameplay. It’s a game you play to enjoy it and take in the action. Parents can also play with their children who are about the same age or slightly younger than Izzy himself.

Lost words: Behind the Page is a sweet and heartbreaking story. As you travel with Izzy and Grace, the game is rich with emotions that will keep you thinking long after the game is over.

Final Judgment : Two thumbs up
