The 27th. October NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 3070 series of graphics cards. We watched the Founders Edition GeForce RTX 3070 at a discount of $499. The GeForce RTX 3070 FE is based on the new amplifier architecture and is part of the GeForce RTX 3080 in terms of price and performance. The GeForce RTX 3070 is mainly a replacement of the previous generation GeForce RTX 2070 and GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER.
NVIDIA introduced the GeForce RTX 3070 with the same performance as the previous generation GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE at a price of $1,199. In our review of the GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition we found that depending on the game and the resolution it is exchanged with the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE. In most cases, the GeForce RTX 3070 FE is linked to the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE, with the exception of a few cases where it is simply linked to the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE.
One aspect we did not cover in our introductory presentation is the overclocking of the GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition graphics card. We believe that overclocking the GeForce RTX 3070 FE can help the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE outperform in slower games. Today’s report focuses on the overclocking of the GeForce RTX 3070 FE and then compares performance with the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti in several races with and without 1440p, 4K and ray tracing.
How to overclock the GeForce RTX 3070 FE?
Before accelerating the GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition, be aware that this is a unique graphics card from NVIDIA. The PCB design, selected hardware components and the incredibly unique and patented design of the cooler and fan are unique to NVIDIA. Therefore, the overclocking capabilities of this Founders Edition graphics card may vary when overclocking a graphics card made to measure by an overclocking partner.
This is a standard screenshot on the GPUz before you start. Note that Boost Clock 1725MHz on this graphics card with 14 GHz memory. In our review of the launch we found that the standard frequency of the GPU during playback was on average 1935 MHz, which is much higher than 1725 MHz. Usually the frequency is higher than 1900 MHz. So this is our basic frequency for the beginning.
Highest Overblock on GeForce RTX 3070 FE
To overclock this graphics card, we downloaded the latest beta version of MSI Afterburner, which worked perfectly on this graphics card. We were also able to unlock and monitor the GPU. However, we felt that it was better to leave the tension on this graphics card, because it allowed us to reach the maximum TDP much faster, even reducing the clock speed of the GPU while playing the game.
As you can see, there is not much space on this graphics card to improve performance, much less than with the GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition. So we really need to keep an eye on the TDP, which limits the frequency and memory of the GPU in general. Also keep in mind that the boost GPU already controls the voltage and can increase it if necessary, which it does by simply turning the core clock offset.
These are the highest settings we have found stable on our GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition graphics card. As you can see, with this graphics card with power limit, we can only climb up to 109%, while with the GeForce RTX 3080 we can reach up to 115%.
We managed to find +80 stable in the basic change. At +100 we had game isolators within minutes after the game. Higher blood pressure didn’t make them stable. With +90 it worked for the most part, but we noticed that the GPU frequency decreased due to the limitations of the TDP. By setting it to +80, we have achieved a slightly higher minimum GPU frequency. We also tried to add voltage at +80 and +90, but this only lowered the average frequency of the GPU. With +80, the new Boost Clock operates at 1805 MHz.
As a reminder: We’ve been able to push it far enough to +900. With +1000 it would become unstable for us and it would start feeding on this TDP again. At +900 the frequency was increased from 14 GHz to 15.8 GHz. This increases the memory bandwidth from 448 GB/s to 505 GB/s.
This is what overclocking looks like compared to the standard clock frequency. The green line is a standard 1725 MHz GPU boost. The default setting is more than 1900 MHz, well above the boost clock of 1725 MHz. With our overclocking installation, the frequency of the GPU is now mainly above 2025 MHz. In fact, it is usually at 2050 MHz. The average overclocking value was 2048 MHz.
Based on the standard average of 1935 MHz, this corresponds to 6% of the frequency acceleration of the GPU. Overall, it’s not as high as we’d hoped, but let’s take a look at the following pages to see what performance looks like with memory pooling and GPU overclocking.
Here are the data from the GPUz accelerometer. Attention: in this test we have 100% fans to guarantee the greatest acceleration. However, this does not require 100% overblocking. At 100% fan speed, this acceleration gives the operating speed of the 63c GPUs in the Founding Edition. The tensile force of the plate is 246.5 W. The power consumption of the GPU chip is 191W. TDP is 112% higher. GPU Voltage down to 1.0810V
