It’s here! It’s here! Finally, it’s here! We now have ray tracing support in Cyberpunk 2077 from CD Projekt Red on AMD Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards! This support only lasted over 6 months, which should have been ready for the game’s launch. The new patch 1.2 adds ray tracing support for the Radeon RX 6000 series. This means that Cyberpunk 2077 can include Glow, Shadow and Light Beam tracking on the Radeon RX 6900 XT, Radeon RX 6800/XT and Radeon RX 6700 XT.
This new 1.2 patch brings a lot of changes to the game. There are a lot of corrections, it’s really quite extensive. The game has been graphically updated in other areas as well. There are improvements in rendering remote textures. Adjust the visual quality of the underwater elements. Improving the quality of materials. Improvements in or related to internal and external light sources Adjust sludge quality. Improved visual perception of leaf breakage. Various optimizations of shadows, shaders, physics, animation system, occlusion system and facial animation. There really is a lot more here.
To know what requirements and performance you will have, we decided to test it. It is a quick, simple and straightforward performance comparison. We take an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 FE and pit them against each other in ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077.
We’ll also find out what kind of performance degradation you get when you enable features on each graphics card. We test the built-in preset options and manually activate the highlights, then the shadows, then the lights to see how each works on its own.
Let’s see how to enable ray tracing on a Radeon RX 6800 XT. As with the GeForce RTX 3080 FE, you can choose from several fast preference settings at the top. Setting it to Ultra means you have the highest game settings, but no ray tracing.
There are two built-in presets for ray tracing. Medium and ultra beam monitoring. In ray tracing mode, average reflected rays are disabled, while ray traced shadows are enabled and ray traced lighting is average in mode. If you choose the Ultra option, everything is on, you will get reflected beams, shadows and beam led lighting in Ultra mode. The beam lighting option even has a higher setting called Psycho, but don’t bother turning it on as it reduces performance on just about everything.
Since you can also manually go to each option and enable only one beam tracking feature to save energy, we will also test each of these options individually. This way we can see which ones are the most demanding in terms of GPU power and how they compare to each other.

Before we begin, a few notes on the system configuration. For this test, we’re using the Ryzen 9 5900X. We also enabled Resizable BAR and AMD Smart Access Memory on each graphics card. We applied the latest motherboard BIOS, included the Resizable BAR and applied the new VBIOS for the GeForce RTX 3080 FE graphics card and used the latest driver. This means that Resizable BAR is enabled on both graphics cards today, as you can see above. We use the latest drivers for each graphics card, optionally GeForce 465.89 and AMD Adrenalin 2020 Edition 21.3.2.
frequently asked questions
Will the RX 6800 XT have ray tracing?
The AMD RX 6800 XT is the first ray tracing GPU from the Radeon team to support games with Microsoft DirectX Raytracing (DXR) rendering, albeit slower than Nvidia’s competition.
Is the 3080 better than the 6800 XT?
At 1440p, the 6800 XT is 20% faster than the RTX 3080, which is a huge difference in performance considering they are in a similar price range, or at least designed for it. The Ampere architecture is better suited to 4K, or at least powerful components like the RTX 3080.
Will AMD support ray tracing?
The new Radeon RX 6000 series cards have a new core called the Ray Accelerator, where each processing unit on the graphics card contains a Ray Accelerator. This means that the RX 6800 XT is equipped with 72 beam accelerators. … But the new Radeon graphics card will at least have special ray tracing hardware.
