From the developer and co-creator of the Faeria fantasy card games, Richard Garfield (Magic: The Gathering), comes this impressive multi-platform wizard. First: Released on Steam in the summer of 2021, when we may also see a full version of Griftlands, another deckbuilder.
Roguebook will later be released on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
What’s new in Roguebook?
So, what does Roguebook offer to the many villains who move in here? Here are some unusual or unique elements, but keep in mind that the game is still in development.
Hero Duets and Positioning: You play with two heroes, not just one (out of four). During the battle, the heroes are placed in the front or back. The hero in the front row deals damage while defending the back row.
Thick deck : The Roguebook encourages the development of a large deck rather than keeping a small deck focused (the latter strategy is often used in card games). In this video, game designer Richard Garfield explains how he explored the concept of a thick game in Roguebook instead of promoting a thin fighting machine. The more cards you add to your deck, the more hero skills you unlock (but at the cost of a more unpredictable game). New cards can be obtained through card events, rather than as a standard reward after each battle (like Slay the Spire).
Talents: There are six levels of talent (special ability stamina). At the first level, a set of 15 cards can be unlocked. At each level, choose one of the following three talents. These three people will be chosen at random from the pool.
Gems for map updates: Gems can be added to cards by upgrading or transferring them.
Procedurally generated tile map: You are trapped in the pages of the grimoire, Rogubuka. To explore each page and discover more about it (like the maps), you need ink. Defeating enemies can reward you with ink. Roads help you get to the map faster, but exploring the beaten path leads to better rewards. To progress in the game, you must fight a main boss. Only do this if you are strong enough, or if you are out of ink. Each subsequent chapter is more complex.
Enlarge the universe of Faeria: Roguebook is based on an existing universe. For example, a card type called ally is based on Faroese creatures. The four playable characters are based on the legendary cards from the Faeria deck.
The Roguebook demo was free during the Steam Games Festival in February 2021 The demo is currently only available by pre-ordering the full version of Roguebook on Steam for $24.99. The demo contains only two playable characters. The full version for PC is scheduled for release on the 25th. June 2021 scheduled.
This will be a great addition for the Nintendo Switch. We will keep you posted on the release date!
