Sony has given a hint of what the next generation of PlayStation VR controllers will look like. This was announced this morning by Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of SIE, who posted an article on the official PlayStation Blog containing the first images of the device and a list of its unique features. These include adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, finger touch detection, etc.

The first thing you’ll notice about our next-generation VR controller is its unique design, which is shaped like a sphere. This allows you to hold the controller naturally while playing with a high degree of freedom, Nishino writes. Your arm movements are not restricted, which gives developers the opportunity to create a unique gaming experience.

When designing the new controller, we also paid attention to its excellent ergonomics, so that it is well balanced and fits comfortably in any hand. We drew on the knowledge of users who tested with different hand sizes, as well as our years of experience with controllers across all PlayStation platforms. The result is an iconic design that will change the way VR games are played.

Features of the new generation of PS VR controllers

  • Adaptive triggers : Each VR controller (left and right) has an adaptive trigger button that adds a noticeable tension when pressed, like the DualSense controller. If you’ve played the game on PS5, you know the key voltage when you press L2 or R2, for example. B. When you draw a bow to shoot arrows. Applying these types of mechanisms to VR takes the experience to the next level.
  • Tactile return : The new controller features optimized haptic feedback based on its form factor, making every sensation in the game world more immersive, textured and nuanced. As you trek through the rocky desert or land blows in hand-to-hand combat, you’ll feel the difference and amplify the incredible visual and audio experiences that are so important to VR.
  • Detection of fingertip contact : The controller can detect your fingers without having to press them when you place your thumb, index or middle finger. This allows you to make more natural hand movements while playing.
  • Continued: The VR controller is tracked by the new VR headset via the tracking ring on the bottom of the controller.
  • Action buttons / analogue sticks : The left joystick contains an analog stick, a triangular button, a square button, a grab button (L1), a release button (L2) and a scoop button. The right stick contains an analogue stick, cross and circle buttons, a grip button (R1), a start button (R2) and an options button. For example, the finger key can be the following B. can be used to pick up objects in the game.

Nishino gave no details on when he will unveil the next generation PlayStation VR headset. However, he confirmed that the new VR controller will soon be sent to the developer community for testing. Sony revealed last month that it was working on a successor to the PS VR with improved resolution, field of view, tracking and input, as well as a single-cable setup.
