While the developer behind Netflix’s forthcoming sci-fi TV show Altered Carbon has yet to reveal how the show’s twisty plot will work, the online streaming site has revealed some of the other groundbreaking ways the show will use the Frostbite engine.
The Ascent gaming PC is now available. You can pick one up at the Ascent Website. This is the gaming PC that I’ve been using for the past couple of months and can report on its performance first hand. It’s a significant update for the Ascent, with a new cooling system, redesigned chassis, and a new RGB keyboard that has been designed to reflect the game-centric theme of the hardware.
The Ascent was launched in December of last year as a way to get free games, with a subscription to Microsoft’s Game Pass service. Game Pass offers access to over 100 games, including some of the best releases of 2018 and 2019. With Game Pass, Xbox Insiders can get early access to games as they’re being developed, as well as earn free games for completing in-game tasks. Ascent originally launched with a handful of games, but it has been expanded to include a growing library of games, including the latest releases. Ascent will continue to expand and will be updated with new games as they are added to the service.
It’s a unique circumstance. We already seem to know a lot about Age of Empires 4. In October 2021, the game is expected to be published. It won’t be long until it happens! However, no one has a complete understanding of the game.
Relic is currently releasing new Age 4 films at extremely short intervals, with gameplay sequences included on a regular basis. On the official website, certain content-related information are additionally updated or enhanced. What the campaigns are about, how people play, and things like that. Despite this, the overall impression is lacking. Even the closed beta on August 5th won’t alter that since everyone who participates signs an embargo and isn’t permitted to speak about it.
That doesn’t stop enthusiasts like me and you from reading between the lines ahead of time and debating every detail. And one subject keeps reappearing. The illustration. It’s also possible that a more in-depth impression is lacking.
Only the most recent teaser, which included sea combat, sparked yet another round of harsh criticism of the visuals. But there may be more to this abrasive tone than meets the eye. Because Age of Empires 4 isn’t an unattractive strategy game, the reviewers are probably aware of this.
Is there a vocal minority?
A distorted image may result from the large number of critical comments. Despite the fact that these evaluations can be obtained virtually everywhere. Here with us as well as on YouTube or Reddit. You won’t have to look very hard before the topic of the overpowering visuals comes up again.
However, this critique does not seem to have had a significant impact on the number of supporters who continue to believe in the RTS dream and are looking forward to it. The visuals in the comments, for example, are often criticized. However, when compared to YouTube thumbs, the videos still stand up nicely. In the video featuring the naval engagements, there are now 1,500 thumbs up and 240 thumbs down. Certainly not without flaws. However, there is no death penalty.
On our site, we asked for your thoughts on Casus knickknacks out of curiosity. 2,163 people voted on how much they enjoy the visuals in this poll. And the outcome was unexpected. Only 8% thought the visuals were extremely poor, and 13% thought they were terrible. This would imply that 21% of people have a generally unfavorable outlook. However, just 13% thought it was excellent. For the values, the majority are in the center. Even more upbeat. The visuals are rated as average or excellent by 33% of each group.
Judging by the comments, other values might have been more understandable. The point here is that Age 4 doesn’t look “very good.” It doesn’t look bad either. It looks okay to good in the perception of people. But in the case of Age 4, one must not forget what is attached to it.
We prefer to believe in our dreams.
The game’s creators frequently stress the importance of Age 4’s success for the genre. That only this brand is capable of doing what many consider to be impossible. Also, find out what their goals are. Age of Empires 4 will be the “biggest and most costly real-time strategy game since Starcraft 2.”
And it’s at this moment when graphics, ambition, and difficulty collide. The spiritual successor to Age of Empires 2 is Age of Empires 4. Possibly the greatest strategy game ever made. That is still going strong today. There are no errors in such practice. The new editions and remakes had little effect on Age 2. This is how Age of Empires 4 is judged.
That has an effect on our expectations. Superlatives are a favorite of every publisher and developer. However, if you are also the heir of a masterpiece, these pledges take on a new meaning. Then the players are more likely to trust in their own desire. Especially because Microsoft isn’t backed by a tiny publisher.
Above and beyond mediocrity
If that’s the case, even poor or even excellent visuals would have a different impact. A sensible player understands that flashy visuals have no bearing on whether or not a game will be enjoyable. Graphic bezels aren’t a novel concept. On the other hand, it’s difficult to imagine that the “biggest and most costly RTS since Starcraft 2” isn’t reaching any absolute highs in terms of visuals.
This isn’t helped by the fact that Relic nearly relativizes these claims. Because Company of Heroes 3 has been announced in the meanwhile. This will not be released until after Age 4 and will be funded by Sega rather than Microsoft. Another RTS from the same company, although this one generated less visual debates.
As a fan, you begin to have doubts. Can Age of Empires 4 be the game that fans and creators want it to be if the visuals don’t match? Especially because none of the trailers included gameplay that was consistent. Those were just a few scenes. In a promotional film, to be precise. A setting in which you can otherwise show off your finest qualities.
And it is precisely at this point that Age 4 is presently incapable of anything more than decent mediocrity. Or, to put it another way, it can only reveal itself. Fans, on the other hand, do not anticipate a high average from Age 4. It was expected to be the next great strategic game. And the visuals alone are insufficient to communicate this.
What does this imply?
So, do we have to write Age 4 off now? I wouldn’t go quite that far. It’s essential to remember what the expectation is in all of the debates regarding Age 4’s visuals. And this isn’t being met right now. Because there is no counterbalance at the moment.
Everything we know about the gameplay comes from developer promises and blog postings. That has the potential to be intriguing. It’s debatable if it will play out that way. There, graphics are much simpler to categorize.
Perhaps the image suggests that Age of Empires 4 will not be the strategic masterpiece that rekindles the passion for traditional real-time strategy games. But maybe no one can. Let’s look at things from a different perspective: Microsoft isn’t even attempting to wow us with its visuals. Instead, depend on strong player loyalty via seamless gaming across a range of platforms. In the end, they may be so successful that no one remembers the graphic.
As the end of the year approaches, we’ve finally found out what is in the Game Pass for 2019.
