Middle Ages

This is the Middle Ages you were born into, what kind of life are you going to lead? Will it have good prospects or will it be suddenly fatal?

The choice of life: Medievalism is a simulation card game where every decision you make is one card at a time. Sometimes turning over a card can mean a continuation of the story, or you can lose a heart, if you lose all hearts, you will die!

An old woman finds a bottle.

The game starts with an old woman working in the field, she finds a bubble, the bubble bursts and breaks in her hand. Then you are born into a large rural family with eleven brothers and sisters. Are you lying still like a baby, or crying in a crib so everyone can hear you? This is the beginning of your life in the Middle Ages, you will make many different decisions in the game.

The choice of life: Medievalism is not a long game, I finished the first part in just over an hour sitting down. That doesn’t mean I’ve seen the whole game, which should have a scenario. Since then, I’ve played the game several times and each time the story changed depending on the choices I made in choosing the cards. The various plot twists make the game very interesting, as you never know in which direction the plot will unfold.

What choice are you going to make?

You work in the fields or hire an apprentice blacksmith to make weapons. Life can take a bad turn, you can find yourself on the street begging for food. Siding with the superstitious peasants or trying to kill the king. There are even surprises waiting for you when you die. Since I don’t want to give most of the story away, I’ll leave it dead – it’s not over yet!

These are all decisions that need to be made without reading up too much. The part of the story you are told by the text at the top of the screen. After reading, read the choices on the two cards and choose one.

Duty cycle

The game unfolds quickly and the story is engaging enough to keep you alert and making your decisions. It reminds me more of a visual novel than any of the genres listed on the Nintendo games page.

In addition to the choices you make, you also learn skills like dodging and counting, and a sword and shield. As you play the game, you also win matches that resemble success, there are a number of them, 47 in total. Titles like Kingslayer, which you win by killing a king, and Treasure Hunter, which of course you win by, as the title suggests, finding a treasure.

You start the game with three hearts, which you can quickly lose depending on the decisions you make in the game. Hearts can also be replenished by eating at a tavern if you have this card, as well as other choices you can make.

Visual aids and controls

The look of the game is pretty simple, but it is a card game after all, so you don’t need fancy graphics. I like the way the game looks, and what is shown on the screen is good enough to make your decisions. The game is bright and colorful with a minimum of tension.

The music is beautiful and soothing, but seems to run with several other tracks and can get a little repetitive if you listen to it too often. The game is controlled with a Joy-Con or a touch screen. I mostly used the touch screen and had no problems with the controls.

Completion

It’s a fun game where you choose to be adventurous. It’s ideal for fast and long gameplay, depending on how your decisions affect your characters’ health.

The game has a replay value as you try to get all the games and see the different plots to the end. It may sound simplistic, but it’s a fun game that you can spend a few enjoyable hours with – and for just a few euros the game costs in the online store!

Final Verdict: I love
