This creates a unique gameplay concept in which you must solve puzzles while moving back and forth between the 2D and 3D worlds. We swap the dimensions and solve some pretty interesting puzzles in this review of the PC version of Toodee and Topdee.

Toodee and Topdee’s tale isn’t very profound, but it is amusing. The game starts with Aleph, the lone living entity, deciding to create life. He develops several universes, two of which are dedicated to our primary protagonists, Toodee and Topdee. Aleph builds a Semi-Colon in the middle of his universe to establish a balance between the worlds. However, when faults begin to emerge in the globe, Aleph is unable to deal with the management strain. He employs Toodoo as an assistant to help him repair the problems. Things are normal until Toodoo realizes that once the glitches are corrected, Aleph may no longer need him, so he takes the Semi-Colon, throwing the world into turmoil.

Review: Toodee and Topdee

Toodee and Topdee may seem to be your typical platformer at first glance, but it mixes top-down and side-scrolling action that you can quickly switch between with a single button push. Because the worlds have merged and bugs now control the universe, Toodee and Topdee are trapped in the same environment, with their dimensions merged as well, giving you a whole new method of solving puzzles and advancing through the levels. In Toodee and Topdee, a typical level will see you alternating between the two characters as they utilize their unique dimensions to assist each other in reaching the final portal and progressing to the next level.

Let’s begin with Toodee, who exists in a 2D side-scrolling universe. Toodee is only able to move left and right, as well as leap. The higher Toodee can leap in the game, the longer you press the jump key. Topdee, on the other hand, is present in the 3D environment and can roam about pretty much wherever he wants as long as he has a route. If he has any blocks laying about, he can lift them and put them in gaps to construct bridges, but they cannot be removed once they are in place. By pressing X on the controller, you may switch between Toodee and Topdee while also altering the game’s viewpoint.

Review: Toodee and Topdee

Toodee & Topdee is a puzzle game that follows the same tried-and-true pattern of completing the problem to get to the level’s conclusion. The level’s conclusion is decided by a portal, and you must guarantee that Toodee and Topdee arrive safely at this gateway in order to finish the level. The game starts off simple as it teaches you to the fundamentals of the game, but it soon becomes more challenging as you go through the levels, solving more complex riddles in order to reach the exit. As you advance through the stages, you will come across a variety of monsters that you must dodge while completing riddles. When it comes to killing, the game will provide you plenty of opportunities to do so.

While the game does not necessarily push you, there is a timed system in place that displays at the conclusion of each level as well as in your main saved file information. This system maintains track of all of your game deaths as well as your overall game finish time. The game has five distinct worlds, each with its own scenery, obstacles, and puzzles to complete. Toodee and Topdee have a user interface that is similar to that of a mobile game, where you choose a planet and then select a level from a grid-like structure. Before moving on to the next level, you must finish the previous one. Each area has a boss battle at the end, and there are lots of cutscenes in between stages.

You must switch between Toodee and Topdee depending on the circumstances to solve puzzles. When you transfer to a new dimension, the other character freezes in position, allowing the other to move and assist them. You may need to assist the other in between acts, or one of you may be able to put up the puzzle in place while the other rides it to the portal. This is unusual since the stages get more difficult as the narrative progresses.

Topdee, who can lift boxes and put them underneath Toodee as he leaps from one level to another to collect keys, does most of the hard work since Toodee is all about leaping about. Toodee and Topdee can both gather keys in order to unlock doors and portals. Toodee and Topdee can both gather keys, therefore you may choose who to collect keys with depending on the level. The scenario may only allow one of the two to go ahead at a time, so it all depends on the level and position you’re in at the moment. As you advance through the game, you’ll encounter additional worlds where you’ll have to deal with a variety of new challenges, such as water puzzles and portable portals, in order to solve the riddles.

The transition between the two game modes is smooth, and you may go back and forth between side-scrolling and top-down 3D. There are no wobbly displays or other bugs in this game. It may not take long to finish all five worlds of the game, depending on how good you are at solving riddles. In this scenario, you may repeat the levels in the hopes of improving your best time, restarts, and death counts. All of this is kept track of by the game. I wouldn’t call myself a problem solver, but certain stages did take me a long to find out the answer. The game’s puzzles aren’t too difficult, so unless you’re terrible at them, you’ll be able to finish it without destroying your controllers.

With that stated, Toodee and Topdee is in a very stable state at the time of its release. I don’t remember any glitches or hiccups throughout my gaming, and I’ve put a lot of time into the game so far since I was attempting to surpass my previous best timings in various levels and also striving for no-death runs in some of the more difficult levels. The music is fantastic and perfectly complements the game’s overall concept. The cutscenes are good, and the game as a whole seems like a full product that doesn’t skimp on any element. One thing I’ll mention is that I’m not a fan of the standard mobile-style level choosing displays. I’ve yet to come across a puzzle game with a visually appealing level choosing interface.

The Bottom Line:

We’ve seen a number of platformers inspired by Super Meat Boy since its debut. Some of them were excellent, while others were below average. I’m thrilled that Toodee and Topdee is included in the list of excellent games, and that it also has its own unique gaming mechanism. Unlike other games, there is no scoring based on your performance in the game. You may attempt to surpass your previous scores if you wish, but the game does not compel you to do so. The game’s character design is adorable, and the fact that both 2D sidescrolling and 3D top-down action operate seamlessly and smoothly is really gratifying. Toodee and Topdee should be on your must-play list if you like puzzle platformers and are searching for something new, particularly a puzzle game with co-op action and exciting boss battles.

8.5/10 for the overall performance.
