REVIEW – Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is a game that has lost its history and release time by about fourteen years. Around 2007 it may have been a reasonably marketable title, but now it seems generally outdated. The basic idea is good, but it’s the execution that makes it fail.

I know nothing of the dark world in which this game is set.

Kahal

…is the name of a so-called eco-terrorist werewolf that we can control. He’s part of a pack (they’re half wolves, after all) that has to take down a giant corporation called Endron. Everything was going according to plan until Kahal’s uncontrollable rage ruined everything and made him leave the pack, but he had to come back to get rid of the company and save the rest of his family. This article about societies also exists in Cyberpunk 2077, but compared to this game, ….this is shit, so WTAE to the end, it’s pretty cliché. If the presentation had been at least a little better, I wouldn’t have minded so much, but even the actors’ voices came across as inferior to me. The few scenes that were supposed to evoke emotion were like dry scenes with no power behind them. This made it all hard to believe.

So the story and sound aren’t quite right anymore, and the gameplay doesn’t help either, although Tile has three forms. As a human, he can interact with computers as such. As a wolf (that would be his wolf form), you can get a stealth approach (which you almost have to use), while as a Crinos (that would be the werewolf form), you can use melee if you can’t use a crossbow to get rid of enemies coming at you in waves. But there are things like artificial intelligence, just plain stupid. When you’re in solitude, you have two types of enemies – one that stands still and looks around, and one that walks around. I’ve already seen something like this in a game about the 2008 Polish budget (Agent/Detective Rutkowski). I almost forgot to mention inconsistency, apart from stupidity. Try doing the same thing twice in the same scenario. One time you get caught and sent back to the previous checkpoint, and the other time you miss the spot in question. The trick may be good, but it fails – which is basically where the game loses a point from its score.

I dropped another one when I started yawning during the fight, no, it wasn’t because I accidentally played the game at 11pm. Instead, it was because the game was so simple that even the rag doll made me think, “Oh. I’m not surprised.” The RPG skill tree doesn’t even seem to have changed combat, and boss fights have the usual challenge of having more HP and doing more damage. It’s going to happen again and again. Like Pécs FM does every Saturday night. (And they don’t care).

Krinos

So I labeled the WTAE as something very mediocre, but it failed even more due to the lack of polish. For example, there are certain gates that only enemies go through to prevent them from spawning. Yes, there’s more than that. The problem is that they appear in front of those doors, and their appearance also seems to remind me that the game missed its release time by about 14 years, as those character models look like either late PS2 games or early PS3 games. While the game’s visuals are not quite right, the game’s cinematography is much, much better.

Don’t tell me the girls spent their budget on this! I’ve rarely seen that happen. Maybe in Rogue Warrior in 2009, but the voice acting was decent. Plus, the WTAE is pretty short. No kidding, you can do it in less than six hours, and I’m sure you can do it in 30 minutes too. I expected more from Cyanide, but I remember they also did Call of Cthulhu a few years ago. If only they had stayed with Styx. At least those two were entertaining, even if they were more platformers than action RPGs. С… Invisibility.

Endron

Werewolf: Apocalypse – Earthblood gets a 5/10 because it does what it’s supposed to do, but without the flavor. Nacon, formerly known as Bigben Interactive, won’t have much use for it outside of World of Darkness fans – for them it’s a 6/10 game, but no more. It’s seriously average in just about everything: story, graphics, audio, gameplay, maybe the atmosphere is a little above everything else, but even then I’m not sure. This game should be available on the Epic Games Store in 6 to 12 months. I would also add that if you don’t know the story, this game won’t make you look for it. That’s what we needed to do: get people interested in the world of darkness. It’s an opportunity that Sianid and Nakon missed, because it would have piqued the interest of players in Vampire: Masquerade – Bloodlines 2. But they won’t be.

To:

The movie was good. The setting was good.
Stealth could be good.

Against:

– … but not always, when the game doesn’t make sense …
Average in almost everything, and the visuals are dated….
It’s not noticeable in the backstory …
